EBS Update
Insight Into A Primary IHETS Initiative

For over twenty five years, IHETS has been tasked to manage licensed radio frequencies, called Educational Broadcast Service (EBS).  EBS licenses were given to universities in the state by the FCC to transmit television programming to accredited public and private schools, colleges, and universities for the formal education of students enrolled in courses for academic credit.

Over time, the use of this frequency changed as the FCC loosened up restrictions on the EBS band and allowed for two-way communications and the ability to lease unused bandwidth to commercial wireless operators that in turn use it for 4G commercial applications.  IHETS has worked with member universities to lease their unused bandwidth to commercial operators.

IHETS is currently managing twenty five different licenses throughout the State of Indiana for its member institutions.  The FCC requires for each license we demonstrate the radio frequencies are being used for educational purposes.   To meet this requirement, IHETS is engaging educational institutions around Indiana such as K-12, educational co-ops, public and private universities and coming up with creative and innovative ways to deploy this exciting new technology.
