The American Heritage Dictionary defines it as: “Freedom from risk or danger; safety” or “Freedom from doubt, anxiety, or fear; confidence”.
Professionals in risk management may argue there is a significant difference between the first and second definition. Being free from risk or danger is a substantially different thing than having freedom from doubt, anxiety, or fear. After all, being asleep one is likely free of doubt, anxiety, or fear, which has little to do with being free from risk or danger as a burglar is breaking into a home. In many ways, this same logic applies to what IHETS views as a substantial difference in practices, approaches and methodologies to information security.
The common approach is to take one or multiple sets of mandated regulations and let those check boxes drive design and implementation: firewall, check; antivirus, check; change management process, check. Excellent now it’s done and the information is secure – sleep tight.
