Brief biography

Dr. Corbato currently manages Internet2’s portfolio of advanced technology initiatives that integrate a number of member-engaging projects in networking, middleware, security, performance, and diagnostics. He also develops strategies and relationships for the next generation of network infrastructure in support of U.S. research and education.

Previously, he held responsibility for the Abilene Network, which provides high-performance connectivity and access to advanced network services to over 220 research universities and affiliated institutions in the United States. At Internet2, Dr. Corbato also has been responsible for overseeing the Internet2 K20 Initiative and FiberCo as well as Internet2’s relationship with the Quilt, the national collaborative of regional networks.

Prior to joining Internet2 in June 2000, Dr. Corbato was the technical lead for the Pacific/Northwest Gigapop and manager of network engineering at the University of Washington, Seattle. He remains an affiliate faculty member in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering there. He serves as a board member and treasurer of both FirstMile.US and National LambdaRail (NLR). He is recognized as a long-time advocate for the development of regional optical networks and helped found FiberCo, which has provided over 7,000 route-miles of dark fiber to many such regional networks and concurrently served as a market maker nationally. He also is a visiting fellow at the Center for High Performance Computing at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, where he is based.

His academic background is experimental astrophysics. He earned his B.A. from Rice University and his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania. He later was a member of the research faculty at the University of Utah.
