Brief biography

Mike McPherson current serves dual roles as the CEO of Michigan’s Merit Network, one of the nation’s first state data networks, and as special counselor to the provost of the University of Michigan. Prior to joining Merit, McPherson served from 1995-2004 in IT leadership roles in the College of Literature, Science & the Arts at the University. From 1978 to 1995 he held several positions at Michigan State University, including systems manager for the MSU/NIH Mass Spectrometry Facility, systems analyst for the Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences, and project manager/manager of operations for the Center for Computer-Aided Engineering and Manufacturing.

He holds a B.A. in Multidisciplinary Humanities (physics, history of art, theatre) from Michigan State University and has completed some graduate work in astrophysics. His professional memberships include the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Association for Computing Machinery.
