INDIANAPOLIS—High school students interested in advanced placement opportunities, current college students who need to complete required courses, and those who are considering their educational options via distance education are encouraged to begin registering now for the fall 2006 semester.

This year, more than 3,000 courses and hundreds of degree and certificate programs will be available to students interested in studying at a distance. They include credit and noncredit college classes, advanced placement courses, and career development opportunities for educators and other professionals.

In addition to online courses, distance education classes will also be delivered via Web-based video conferencing, videotape and CD-ROMs, cable/public television, and traditional correspondence.

The Indiana College Network (ICN) offers a searchable online course catalog—including in-depth class descriptions and full plans of study for each degree and certificate program listed—at www.icn.org.

“Because distance education courses are increasingly popular, especially those offered online via the Internet, they tend to fill quickly,” says Susan Scott, director of e-learning at the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS). “If students are looking for specific courses, subject areas, or programs, now is the time to begin exploring their options.”

Advanced placement distance ed courses for high school students are offered by the Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities at Ball State University and the Indiana Virtual Academy, a partnership between four Ripley County school corporations.

Institutions offering college-level classes through ICN include Ball State University, Indiana Tech, Indiana Wesleyan University, Indiana State University, Indiana University (all campuses), Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana (all campuses), Purdue University (all campuses), Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, Taylor University, University of Indianapolis, University of Saint Francis, University of Southern Indiana, and Vincennes University.

ICN is one of the services offered by IHETS, a consortium of higher education institutions in Indiana that includes seven public colleges and universities as well as 31 independent colleges and universities.

Working together through IHETS, these institutions provide flexible, real-time and on-demand access to educational programs for Hoosiers in the convenience of their homes, school, and offices.

ICN is a gateway to statewide information on distance learning opportunities in Indiana. On its Web site, learners can get information about courses and programs as well as how to get started, distance education basics, how to pay for college, admission and registration, tuition and fees, and more. Students can also preview an online class to see what its like to take a class via the Internet or video.

Students interested in courses and programs available via distance education should visit www.icn.org, e-mail the Indiana College Network at info@icn.org, or call 1.800.ICN.8899 (800.426.8899). To subscribe to ICN’s bimonthly e-newsletter, e-mail info@icn.org.
