INDIANAPOLIS—Speaker of the House Brian C. Bosma announced in a press conference today that Hoosiers will now be able to view the proceedings of daily legislative sessions in the House of Representatives live from the Indiana General Assembly's Web site.

Bosma acknowledged and thanked the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) for their role in making the project a reality. IHETS installed, configured, and tested the real-time video streaming system in anticipation of today’s announcement.

For the first time in the state’s history, Hoosiers can view what goes on in the state’s capitol from the convenience of their home or office computers. Audio recordings of debate in the legislature have been available on the Internet since 2001.

According to Bosma, the proceedings (which can be viewed on the Web at www.in.gov/legislative) give Hoosiers "immediate, open, and inexpensive access" to debate within the House, eliminating the “mystery” of knowing what “takes place behind the Statehouse walls.” The first images appeared about 1:30 p.m. The video appears on a 15-second delay but is otherwise live.

The project is the most recent example of IHETS’ longstanding partnership with state government, which has included meeting and managing the audio, video, and technology needs of the House, Senate, and Indiana Supreme Court for the past several years. In addition, IHETS will provide the audio, video streaming, and archiving of Governor Elect Mitch Daniels’ inauguration and state-of-the-state address later this month.
