EDUCAUSE has announced due dates for two reports that must be filed by those institutions required to comply with the FCC’s Communications Assistance for Law Enforcement Act (CALEA). The Monitoring Report is due February 12 followed by the Security System Report (SSI) on March 12, 2007.
Public notices regarding both are posted on the CALEA section of EDUCAUSE’s Web site, which also provides links to frequently asked questions, a tech expert group, discussion group, report instructions, samples, forms, and much more.
According to EDUCAUSE, the FCC released a public notice establishing filing deadlines and stating "facilities-based broadband Internet access and interconnected VoIP service providers subject to CALEA must file," which means that exempt institutions are not required to submit these reports.
Early recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE) and EDUCAUSE were that most institutions do not have to comply or file the reports. To determine whether or not your institution must comply, explore EDUCAUSE’s resource material, including:
- The Application of CALEA to Higher Education Networks
- Thinking Through the CALEA Exempt/Non-Exempt Issue
- Letter from the Networking Policy Council
EDUCAUSE also maintains a clearinghouse on CALEA legal opinions and analyses, which includes opinions, issue briefs, and court rulings related to compliance exemptions.
