IP Video Information for Technology Coordinators

What do we need to make it work?

Bandwidth

Your organization may need to make changes to its local network; video conferencing requires large amounts of bandwidth. A T1 line has the capacity to support one or two video calls, maintaining the minimum for acceptable quality while still allowing space for your data traffic (email, etc.). This is why videoconferences attempted over the “commodity” (off the Indiana Telecommunications Network) network are usually unsatisfactory.

Depending on how much bandwidth your organization uses, your existing Internet connection may not be sufficient to handle the demand of video conferencing. Through the certification process, ITN engineers will be able to determine whether additional bandwidth is needed. The capacity and capabilities of your internal network (Local Area Network) will also need to be considered. Ideally, the path from the network interface on the IP video unit to the router should consist exclusively of switched, 100 Mb full-duplex segments.
