Surveys: I think some of you may need a little more
structure to your surveys. Please read the section in your textbook
on audience surveys. Think in terms of 3-6 VERY SPECIFIC questions.
See the following example:
My speech will be to demonstrate
how to properly put on a bike helmet. Please answer the following
questions.
1. Did you ride a bike as a child?
2.
Did you wear a helmet? Why or why not? 3. Do you
currently own a bike? 4. Do you always wear a helmet? 5.
Are there children in your life? Please list
names, ages and relationship to you. 6. How much
do you know about bike safety?
Then, when you write your speech
you will be able to use the information gained from your survey.
(e.g., Susan has two nieces who ride bikes but never wear
helmets. In my survey she told me this worries her a lot. Also
based on my survey, I know that 19 of the 24 of you believe that bike
safety is very important, but most of you don't know a lot about it.).
If you have already given out a survey, feel free to follow up
with a more specific one. The more specific information you obtain,
the better you will be able to interest this specific audience.
Please let me know if you have questions (also, re-read the
message below--I added to it early Tuesday afternoon).
