SeaTrek Distance Learning
SeaTrek Distance Learning is a project of the Mote Marine Laboratory &
Aquarium in Sarasota, FL. The Mote Aquarium is an educational museum providing
marine programs for all levels, from elementary-school children through
adults. In 1995, the Mote Aquarium participated in distance learning demonstrations,
allowing students at sites as far away as England to drive a ROV in Mote's
shark tank. In 1996, Mote Aquarium began its own distance learning program
utilizing state-of-the-art video conferencing technology. This program
became known as SeaTrek.
From 1999-2001, SeaTrek received three consecutive Technology Literacy Challenge Fund grants. SeaTrek brings high-energy, multimedia marine science programming right into the classroom using video conferencing and Internet technology.
Their programs feature real scientists working in the field with interviews showing how their interests led them to their careers in science. Each program is supported by a free, downloadable, companion curriculum, aligned with National and Sunshine State Science Education Standards.
SeaTrek programs are available to any school with IP video conferencing equipment on the ITN. They currently have five programs, including: "Sharks: Devouring the Myths," "Sea Turtles: Amazing Reptiles of the Sea," "Mammals, Mammoths, Manatees," "Mission: See Deep, ROV," and "Coastal Habitats." In these 50-minute interactive programs, students may virtually accompany Mote scientists into the waters with sharks and manatees, examine plant specimens, and even pilot a remote operated vehicle from their classroom. Each program is accompanied by standards-aligned curriculum materials and is designed to be used as a stand-alone addition to existing science curriculum.
